PREFACE.
In the year 1784 the Bristol Baptist College (then called the Bristol Education Society)
came into possession of the very valuable bequest of "the library, pictures, coins, and other
curiosities," which belonged to the Eev. Andrew Giffoed, D.D., who had been Pastor of a
Baptist Church in Little Wild Street, London, and also Assistant Librarian in the department
of MSS. in the British Museum. His Library contained a collection of MSS. and of early
printed books, amongst which were a large number of early English Bibles, and in particular the
unique copy of Tyndale's First Edition of the New Testament printed in 1525 or 1526.*
Amongst the "curiosities" were certain fragments in Greek characters, which were described in a
Catalogue printed in the year 1795 as "Some Pieces of an old Copy of the Septuagint said to
have been found in the Ruins of the City of Herculaneum." Nothing more was known or thought
of these fragments, until, about the year 1834, I found, by comparing them with the two
plates pixblished by the Antiquarian Society,** that they were fragments of the celebrated Codex
Cottonianus (Otho B. VL), preserved from the fire which, in 1731, destroyed a large portion of
the Cottonian Library. What had become of other fragments seems to have been unknown.
In 1778 tlie Rev. Dr. Henry Owen published the very accurate collation of the Cottonian MS.
which had been made by Grabe in 1703 *** and which is still preserved in the Bodleian Library.
Dr. Owen states in his preface that the fragments which had been preserved from the flames
were lost ("schedas quasdam flammis misere vitiatas, nunc vero deperditas"). In the Cata-
logue of the Cottonian Library, published by the British Museum in 1802 and edited by

olim facta; aunc demum summa cura edita ab Henrico Owen, M. D., S. 11. S., Ecclesiae Sancti Olai Rectore, &e,
Londini, MDCCLXXVIII.
Mr. Joseph Planta, then Principal Ijibrarian, it is stated that eighteen fragments are all that
now remain, and that none of those engraved by the Antiquarian Society are amongst them.
Tliis statement was repeated by Hartwell Horne (himself one of the Assistant Librarians
of tlie British Museum) in his Introduction to the Critical Study of the Scriptures, until he was
informed by myself, in 1834 or 1835, of the existence of the fragments in the Baptist Museum at
Bristol. In later editions he added a note to this effect, without however altering the statement
in his text. In the year 1847 the fragments which had been assorted under the superintendence
of Sir Frederic Madden, the Keeper of MSS., were numbered up to 130, and of these 93 were
identified; in the following year the whole of the fragments to the number of 147 were inlaid in
stout paper and bound up in a quarto volume: those that had been identified being placed in
order, and the chapter and verse marked on each, from fo. 1 to fo. 111. Some few mistakes,
however, occur in the numbering: thus fos 39 and 40 are parts of the same leaf, as also are
fo. 47 and 48 and fo. 99 and 100, and fo. 51 should be placed before fo. 50. The leaves
onward, numbered 112 to 147, remained for the most part unidentified. About 16 of these were
deciphered imperfectly by Tischendorf; and, of these, three are identified by him in his Pro-
legomena, whilst the other 13 remained without identification. Most of these I have identified,
as well as a few others which Tischendorf had not transcribed at all.
Tischendorf did not seek further information either from the plates of the Society of
Antiquaries, to which he himself refers in his Prolegomena and from which he might have ob-
tained some of the missing fragments which are here printed, or from the fragments preserved in
Bristol, of the existence of which he was informed by Dr. Wt t.i.ta m Wright (then of the British
Museum and now Professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge), as Dr. AVright himself
tells me. In all these particulars Tischendorf's collation is incomplete.
When I undertook five or six years ago, at the suggestion of the Rev. F. H. Scrivener, D.D.,
to transcribe and print the few Bristol fragments, I did not at all anticipate that I was entering
on a work that would cost me so much time and labour. But, having begun, I was desirous
of making the supplement as complete as possible. The difficulty of identification was greatly
increased in consequence of the numbers assigned to the fragments by Tischendorf not correspond-
ing with those in the Codex itself, as now numbered, after fo. 47. Towards the end of the
transcription also, Tischendorf's numbers are in utter confusion, apparently from his papers
being disarranged after his leaving the Museum: thas e. g. fo. 48 (a part of 47) which he transcribed
imperfectly is numbered by him CXXXXII, and is left undetermined in his text, but in his
Prolegomena (p. XXX VT) it is referred to its proper place; the next fragment fo. 49 is numbered
by him XXXXVIII. Other fragments are in like manner either omitted altogether or relegated
to the end with nimibers apparently taken at random, so that fo. HI (the last of the fragments
\l
identified in the Codex) is numbered by Tischendoep CIIII. After this his numbers cease to
be consecutive, as many as twenty being altogether omitted. This is shown in the Synopsis
which follows the present Preface, in, which I have also distinguished the parts which were
wanting before the fire took place, amounting to at least 36 leaves. Grabe's collation easily
furnishes this information. The Synopsis, it is hoped, will furnish to those who wish to ascer-
tain ^y particular reading at present to be found in the MS. the means of doing so; but it is
only just to add that, as far as I have been able to observe, Grabe is extremely accurate, and
his collation may be confidently depended on.
The object of the present publication is not to reproduce Tischendoef's collation of the
MS., but merely to supply its deficiencies; consequently no part of Tischendoef's text appears,
except where it seemed needful in order to connect clearly the new matter with that given by
him, or to correct mistakes into which he had fallen.*
Three small fragments which I have identified were unfortunately overlooked till after the
present text was printed. Two of them are placed on the same leaf of the Codex, fo. 137, and
are imperfectly transcribed by Tischendorf, CXXXXVIII B. They are separate fragments.
One of them is part of fo. 44, ch. 24, 56 58, and contains the endings of lines 9, 10, 11 and
probably 15. The other contains parts of four lines of ch. 27, 43 45. The third fragment,
fo. 136 (T. CXXXXni), is part of fo. 45, and contains parts of six or seven lines of ch. 24, 65.
The text of these fragments is given on the next page.
The plates of the Antiquarian Society were evidently engraved for the sake of the illustra-
tions, and therefore only a few lines of the text are given in any of them. These have all been
transcribed wherever the leaves are now wanting in the Codex.
In conclusion I have to express my thanks to the Authorities of the British Museum for
the facilities afforded me in the deciphering of the MS., and especially to E. M. Thompson Esq.,
the Keeper of MSS., for his ready assistance and valuable help in all cases when I have had
occasion to apply to him.
Baptist College,
Bristol, August 1880. F. W. GOTCH.
* One of the most striking instances of mistake is in the first passage given in this Supplement Gren. 3, 1
where the MS. clearly reads ojsocfij, and not xatooiftj as given by Tischendokf.
